ธนากรเป็นนักวิจัยที่มุ่งมั่นและมีความสนใจอย่างมากในด้านการเงินเพื่อสภาพภูมิอากาศ มีประสบการณ์ทำงานเป็นที่ปรึกษาที่ธนาคารพัฒนาเอเชีย (Asian Development Bank) และเคยเป็น CIF Fellow ที่ธนาคารโลก (World Bank) ปัจจุบันกำลังศึกษาปริญญาเอกที่มหาวิทยาลัยเกียวโต โดยทำวิจัยโดยใช้แบบจำลอง Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM) เพื่อวิเคราะห์นโยบายและประเมินผลกระทบทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ
